Distractions

Does having a distraction help get your mind off of your pain? We have all heard that finding a distraction is a key to living with rheumatoid arthritis. Without a distraction, you will soon be focusing on your pain and most times this only makes it worse.
I have several distractions that I use. I love music and have a music room that I can crank it up and get lost for hours in rock and blues. On my better days, I have two motorcycles that I love to ride and work on. A more recent hobby I have is photographing old iron truss bridges in our area. I like to ride one of my bikes out to the bridges. My favorite ones are the abandoned bridges that time has forgotten about. Just me and the bridge together in a quiet photo shoot imagining days past when it was a shiny proud member of society.
What are your distractions and do you feel they work for you?

Distractions definitely help me with the pain. Being a working single parent, most of day is about distraction. I generally don’t realize that I am in pain until my head hits the pillow at around 10 pm every night and then when I awake at 5:30 am every morning. Otherwise, I am always distracted from the pain. I am always on the move raising two very active boys and working fulltime. It is adventure to say the least but all that moving and being active has been my saving grace living with RA. I am busy in whatever my boys are doing so I don’t have a lot of time for my own hobbies. I do make time every once in a while to go out and spend time with girlfriends. I have also gotten more religious since my diagnosis so prayer has become another distraction for me. Additionally, I love being out in nature and exploring especially when it comes to historical attractions. I often venture out to Amish Country with a friend, a sibling, my kids and/or my mom. I am definitely in love with nature and simpler ways and times.

I have been there, I hate switching meds and waiting to see if the new one is going to work. Good luck, hope you find the right med that will give you relief soon.
