Total Knee Replacement

Thought my meds needed tweaking but Xrays show there are 4 osteophytes (bone growths) of significant size and no sinovial fluid or padding left in-between the knee joint of my left leg. Yuck. Only going to get worse. This is my OsteoArthritis acting up…was worried the Remicade was not working but apparently that is not the case. It's a goodnews/bad news thing.

Soooo, it's time for big surgery. My husband had 7 inches below and 6 inches above the knee all bone/joints removed and metal put in it's place…totalled 33 lbs…he's 6'4". I won't have quite the same thing done that he did. I am a baby when it comes to surgery…knock me out, give me drugs, do the deed.

Anyone have suggestions? What should I watch out for? Are there things they didn't tell you that you wished you had known? What was your recovery time? How has your life changed post surgery? I'm only 53 but have had RA for 26 years and OsteoArthritis for almost as long. I know the surgeon I would like but may not be able to get him…we go on a list and the next one up gets you.

I'm getting ready to have double knee replacement and i asked my doctor how many of his patients had infections after surgery and whats the risk of blood clots? What type of implants do you use (brand)? you don't want DePuy there's law suites againt the company. I've had joint replacements in both hands and have no problems so if the knees are the same i have no worries. My joints that has been replaced feel 100% better with very very little pain once in awhile in my hands. I hope everything goes well and leave it all in GODS hands and it will.

YIKES!!! Double replacement? They won't do that here in this part of Canada. The drs feel you should have at least one leg to lean on against a counter etc. We have no choice in the implants…whatever is the newest and best is what we get. The surgeon decides but does ask the patient as well. This will be my first replacement surgery. I had toes broken, ground down, pinned. WOW! That was painful the first 3 days…hooray for morphine. Don't worry I take the minimum and less than what dr says. I rely on my positive attitude and faith in Karma… so far so good. Thanks Patch!

Gosh, it just never ends does it? The only thing I know about surgeries, is to make sure I don't have any cuts or scratches anywhere and that I stop my Enbrel 2 weeks before surgery. I see my surgeon in Oct for my Nov surgery (foot) but those were 2 things my primary and the surgeon told me. Keep us posted and good luck.

How goes it? Are you getting nervous/anxioous re your surgery? Not sure when mine will be as I have to see the surgeon yet. Could be three months or three years! I won't need to stop my Remicade but it will be an issue to get to the clinic for the IV infusion. They do not make house calls. A friend will build a proper ramp. Hubby did a makeshift job last time for the toes' surgery. How to describe the result…hmmmm…Disney thrill ride. Not kidding. It was scary. He had to haul me in a wheel chair from 4 steps up height with the ramp length only nine feet! Oh yeah that takes trust! Take care!

I had a Knee replacement in 2003.They added about 2 lbs of titanium, stainless steel . They left all the legiments and tendons in place . My surgeon Dr. Daniel Glenny in ct is a genious. He cut a 10 inch incission removed the knee cap cleaned it and lined it with composite removed the knee joint and attached connections to the femur(thigh) and Tibia( lower leg) then attched the joint. I woke up and the joint pain was gone!!! I had soft tissue pain but that went away in a few weeks.I was back to work 100% in 12weeks after physical therapy. At the time I was a correctional officer and i had to be able to run and respond to any emergency situation.I retired from corrections in 2011 .The knee itself works well,I have had a little issu of fluid retention due to the developement of ra but that joint is a liitle discomfort from time to time(soft tisse issues) so here's my opinion its about 500% better than what i was left with after the incident that led to the replacement.I say go for it!!

Thanks, I feel reassured. Not certain what the plan is yet as I haven't seen the surgeon…that could take ages. Glenny in ct..is that Connecticut? My daughter is in New Haven. I live in Kelowna,British Columbia, Canada so have to get a surgeon here.

Thanks so much for your description of the process. I'll hang on to that for when I see the dr. What was the incident that led to the replacement? Mine is just years of RA & OA

OUCH! Are you able to work or did you get a compensation/pension payout? Not an easy job…takes a special person, especially these days with even worse drugs than years ago. How are you coping?
